Small Animal Veterinarian Ultrasound Imaging Program: NOT AN ACCREDITATION

Small Animal Veterinarian Ultrasound Imaging Program: NOT AN ACCREDITATION

CE: 35 hours per week

Course Objectives:

This program is designed to meet the growing demand for veterinarians to become competent in the acquisition, measurement, interpretation, and reporting of diagnostic soft tissue and cardiac ultrasound exams. The course will prepare veterinarians to acquire and measure the standard images necessary for diagnostic cardiac and soft tissue ultrasound. They will learn how to systematically interpret studies and prepare a comprehensive report. Veterinarians who successfully complete this program will be able to immediately incorporate diagnostic ultrasound imaging into their veterinary practice. To complete this program veterinarians must have access to a digital ultrasound machine with color and spectral Doppler capability as well as be able to save and export still images and cine loops in DICOM format.

This four-week program is comprised of four one-week sessions spanning 12 months with an optional 5th week. (See dates below)

To successfully pass this course, participants must complete homework consisting of imaging studies on dogs and cats, and they must submit the images electronically in DICOM format for instructor review and feedback. Individuals are highly encouraged to contact the Academy prior to enrolling in the course to confirm that their ultrasound equipment is capable of submitting these studies. After an individual registers for this course, they will be contacted by an Applications Specialist to facilitate connectivity set up prior to the first day of class. Applicants are expected to be available for this.

Individuals involved in this program must be 100% committed to lifelong learning in ultrasound.  Hands-on scanning practice is a vital part of becoming and remaining proficient in ultrasonography, thus the homework portion of this course is considered to be one of the most important.  Completing the homework assignments will take time and commitment, and adequately planning by the attendee.   The homework is a mandatory requirement.  If assigned ultrasound exams are not completed between each week, the attendee may be dropped from the course.

***If for any reason you withdraw from the program before completion, finishing the next year is based entirely on availability.  Attendees registering for the entire program will have priority over those returning from the previous year.

  • Following successful completion of both the soft tissue and cardiac components of this program, attendees will receive a certificate of completion stating proficiency in both soft tissue and echocardiographic imaging. Attendance alone will not result in certificates.
  • Veterinarians will receive 35 hours of RACE approved CE for each week completed.

Who should attend?

  • Veterinarians who wish to become excellent imagers of small animals by being held accountable through written tests, practicums, and homework.

(1) Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary school (DVM or VMD degree).

(2) Applicants must have access to a digital ultrasound machine with color, spectral Doppler, and DICOM capabilities, and they must have access to a computer and network that can transmit imaging studies electronically.
