Understand physics principles as they apply to diagnostic ultrasound.
Recognize and identify common ultrasound artifacts.
Demonstrate patient positioning and preparation for an abdominal ultrasound exam.

Recognize, describe and acquire standard diagnostic two-dimensional abdominal still images and cine loops with an emphasis on larger organs (liver, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder).
Begin to learn to recognize, describe and acquire standard diagnostic two-dimensional abdominal still images and cine loops on smaller organs (adrenal glands, GI tract, pancreas, lymph nodes).
Demonstrate measuring, labeling and saving ultrasound still images and cine loops.
Demonstrate transmitting images/studies for remote review.
Recognize features of diagnostic and non-diagnostic ultrasound images.
Week 1 objectives will be reviewed and reinforced during week 2.
Recognize, describe and acquire standard diagnostic two-dimensional abdominal still images and cine loops with an emphasis on smaller organs (adrenal glands, GI tract, pancreas, lymph nodes).
Document ultrasound exam findings in a written report.
Understand basic relevant abdominal organ ultrasound pathology as applied to abdominal ultrasound cases.
Week 1 and 2 objectives will be reviewed and reinforced during week 3.
Acquire standard diagnostic two-dimensional abdominal still images and cine loops on all abdominal organs with proficiency.
Begin to learn to acquire and interpret color and pulse wave Doppler in the abdomen with an emphasis on identification and documentation of portosystemic shunts.
Learn and practice techniques for ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirates and biopsies on ultrasound phantoms.
This program is designed to meet the growing demand for veterinarians to become competent in the acquisition, measurement, interpretation, and reporting of diagnostic soft tissue ultrasound exams. The course will prepare veterinarians to acquire and measure the standard images necessary for diagnostic soft tissue ultrasound. They will learn how to systematically interpret studies and prepare a comprehensive report. Veterinarians who successfully complete this program will be able to immediately incorporate diagnostic ultrasound imaging into their veterinary practice.
This program also meets the growing demand for veterinary technicians to become competent ultrasound imagers. This course will prepare technicians to acquire the standard images and measurements necessary for a diagnostic cardiac and soft tissue ultrasound. Competence in diagnostic image acquisition when used in combination with a telemedicine service or a consulting veterinarian with expertise in ultrasound interpretation, will facilitate incorporation of diagnostic ultrasound imaging into a veterinary practice.
To complete this program veterinarians and technicians must have access to a digital ultrasound machine with color and spectral Doppler capability as well as be able to save and export still images and cine loops in DICOM format.
This three-session program is comprised of three (4 day) sessions spanning 9 months.
To successfully pass this course, participants must complete homework consisting of imaging studies on dogs and cats, and they must submit the images electronically in DICOM format for instructor review and feedback.
After an individual registers for this course, they will be contacted by an Applications Specialist to facilitate connectivity set up prior to the first day of class. Applicants are expected to be available for this.
Access to a digital ultrasound machine with color and spectral Doppler capability (for both the soft tissue and cardiology courses) and a cardiac measurement package (for the cardiology courses) is mandatory equipment for attendees of these programs. The ultrasound equipment must also have the capability to compress, save, export and send still images and cine loops (3 seconds) in DICOM format. Other image file formats will not be accepted.
** Registrants who have purchased their ultrasound equipment from SOUND will be given priority entrance into the program. Those registrants without SOUND ultrasound equipment will be put on a waiting list and allowed entrance into the program based on the capacity of the program.
Individuals involved in this program must be 100% committed to lifelong learning in ultrasound. Hands-on scanning practice is a vital part of becoming and remaining proficient in ultrasonography, thus the homework portion of this course is considered to be one of the most important. Completing the homework assignments will take time and commitment, and adequately planning by the attendee.
The homework is a mandatory requirement. If assigned ultrasound exams are not completed between each week, the attendee may be dropped from the course.
***If for any reason you withdraw from the program before completion, finishing the next year is based entirely on availability. Attendees registering for the entire program will have priority over those returning from the previous year.
- Following successful completion of this program, attendees will receive a certificate of completion stating proficiency in soft tissue imaging. Attendance alone will not result in certificates.
Who should attend?
- Veterinarians and veterinary technicians who wish to become excellent imagers of small animals by being held accountable through written tests, practicums, and homework.
Prerequisites for Veterinarians
(1) Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary school (DVM or VMD degree).
(2) Applicants must have access to a digital ultrasound machine with color, spectral Doppler, and DICOM capabilities, and they must have access to a computer and network that can transmit imaging studies electronically.
Prerequisites for Veterinary Technicians
(1A) Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program or have an AS or BS degree in Ultrasonography. All such applicants must also submit one letter of recommendation from a sponsoring veterinarian.
(1B) Applicants who are not graduates of one of the above programs will be considered if they have three years of full-time experience in a veterinary clinic, and they submit two letters of recommendation* from two veterinarians, one of which is the sponsoring veterinarian.
- Letters of recommendation should discuss the candidate’s experience and aspects of their character, as well as their clinical skills and academic aptitude that would contribute to successful completion of the course.
