Understand the practical physics of ultrasound.
Identification of common echocardiographic artifacts.
Learn patient positioning and preparation.
Learn probe selection and equipment controls (optimize image quality).
Learn relevant cardiac anatomy.
Understand basic relevant cardiac physiology – sent as a pre-course assignment.
Acquire standard diagnostic two-dimensional cardiac right parasternal, left parasternal and M-Mode images.
Know how to select and measure standard two-dimensional and M-Mode cardiac images.
Recognize normal cardiac ultrasound anatomy.
Recognize features of diagnostic echocardiographic images.
Measure when appropriate, save and transmit images/studies.
Week 1 objectives will be reviewed and reinforced during week 2.
Understand the relevant physics of color Doppler.
Color Doppler image optimization.
Know the strengths and limitations of color Doppler.
Acquire and identify normal and abnormal color flow.
Perform a complete 2D, M-mode and color Doppler echocardiographic study including all standard measurements.
Understand applicable cardiac physiology and enlargement patterns seen in the heart.
Week 1 and 2 objectives will be reviewed and reinforced during week 3.
Perform a complete 2D, M-Mode and Color flow Doppler ultrasound study including all standard measurements.
Describe the 2D, M-mode, and Color flow Doppler features of the common acquired cardiac diseases seen in small animals.
Generate comprehensive descriptive report.
This program is designed to meet the growing demand for veterinarians to become competent in the acquisition, measurement, interpretation, and reporting of diagnostic cardiac ultrasound exams in patients with acquired heart disease. They will learn how to systematically interpret studies and prepare a comprehensive report. Veterinarians who successfully complete this program will be able to incorporate diagnostic echocardiographic exams into their veterinary practice. To complete this program veterinarian must have access to a digital ultrasound machine with color and spectral Doppler capability as well as be able to save and export still images and cine loops in DICOM format.
This is a three-week program with approximately 10 weeks between each week and therefore spans approximately 7 months in total. (See dates below). Each week builds on the previous one. This course holds the attendee accountable for learning the didactic material and scanning technique in the form of daily quizzes, final written and practical exams as well as scanning homework between each of the 3 weeks.
To successfully pass this course, participants must complete homework consisting of imaging studies on dogs and cats, and they must submit the images electronically in DICOM format for instructor review and feedback. Individuals are highly encouraged to contact the Academy prior to enrolling in the course to confirm that their ultrasound equipment is capable of submitting these studies. After an individual registers for this course, they will be contacted by an Applications Specialist to facilitate connectivity set up prior to the first day of class. Applicants are expected to be available for this.
Individuals involved in this program should be 100% committed to lifelong learning in cardiac ultrasound. Hands-on scanning practice is a vital part of becoming and remaining proficient in this modality, thus the homework portion of this course is considered to be one of the most important. Completing the homework assignments will take time and commitment, and adequate planning by the attendee. The attendee can expect to spend about 2 hours per week on their homework studies. The homework is a mandatory requirement. If assigned echocardiographic exams are not completed each week, the attendee will be dropped from the course.
***If for any reason you withdraw from the program before completion, finishing the course in the following year will be based entirely on availability. Attendees registering for the entire program will have priority over those returning from the previous year.
Who should attend?
Prerequisites for Veterinarians
(1) Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary school (DVM or VMD degree).
(2) Applicants must have access to a digital ultrasound machine with color, spectral Doppler, and DICOM capabilities, and they must have access to a computer and network that can transmit imaging studies electronically.
Prerequisites for Veterinary Technicians
(1A) Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program or have an AS or BS degree in Ultrasonography. All such applicants must also submit one letter of recommendation from a sponsoring veterinarian.
(1B) Applicants who are not graduates of one of the above programs will be considered if they have three years of full-time experience in a veterinary clinic, and they submit two letters of recommendation* from two veterinarians, one of which is the sponsoring veterinarian.
