Advanced Echocardiography: Doppler and Hemodynamics – Part 1

May 9 @ 8:00 am - May 11 @ 3:00 pm

CE: 21 Hours – Lecture and Hands-on scanning

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the basic principles of Doppler echocardiography as it applies to color, spectral pulse wave (PW), and spectral continuous wave (CW) Doppler
  • Become familiar with the clinical strengths and limitations of color, PW and CW Doppler
  • Know/learn how to optimize color, PW Doppler, CW Doppler, and Knobology
  • Learn which 2D images are most useful for color, PW Doppler, and CW Doppler integration
  • Understand the role of color Doppler as it relates to spectral Doppler (PW and CW) integration
  • Recognize normal and abnormal color, PW and CW signals
  • Understand spectral Doppler (PW and CW) estimation of pressure gradients and their clinical utility in acquired heart disease in the dog and cat
  • Become familiar with the color, PW and CW Doppler features of common acquired cardiac diseases in the dog and cat. Emphasis will be on the role of color, PW and CW doppler in the diagnosis and staging of diseases such as chronic valve disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardio-myopathy, obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and pulmonary hypertension
  • Become familiar with color, PW and CW Doppler evaluation as part of a standard color, PW, and CW Doppler protocol
  • Hands-on cardiac scanning instruction:
    • Optimization of the right and left side imaging planes to facilitate color, PW and CW Doppler interrogation
    • Color, PW, and CW Doppler associated knobology ie optimization of these images
    • Acquisition and interpretation of a standard color, PW and CW Doppler examination
  • Taught by June Boon, BA, MS and Sonya Gordon, DVM, MS, DACVIM Cardiology

Who should attend?
This course is for veterinarians and technicians who have attended the Echocardiography Diagnostics and Clinical Utility course or have had equivalent clinical experience

Note: This course assumes attendees can acquire and interpret standard right and left parasternal imaging planes. This course is strongly recommended as a pre-requisite for Advanced Doppler Part 2.
